Chapter Spotlight: St. Mesrob Armenian Church, Racine, WI

Chapter Spotlight: St. Mesrob ACYOAChristmas Caroling is only one of the many things which the St. Mesrob (Racine) ACYOA does, but it sure defines what we are about.  Around Christmas we send about thirty youth in two groups to make visits to the sick and to those who have lost someone recently.  Besides what you expect, i.e. singing Christmas carols (sometimes badly) in Armenian and English, we always sit and pray with the person and have great conversations about their memories of the church.  The elderly usually give us bits of wisdom.  lt is great connecting with people who remember our grandparents and great grandparents from when they were young.  Christmas caroling is a great ministry to them and to us.

In addition to caroling, we visit nursing homes and shut ins with Der Yeprem about every other month. Many times these people are on the "edge of life" and they are strengthened and happy about our visit.  Other activities include doing work with Habitat for Humanity homes about nine times a year; helping out at the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army three months a year and having home-based Bible studies. Coming up soon we are looking forward to hosting the Palm Sunday Lahmajoon and salad Luncheon with a program on Vocations, as well as a blood drive in memory of the Martyrs of 1915 in April.

Why ASP?

ASP is the only trip to Armenia sponsored by the ACYOA specifically for young adults. This unique design fosters fellowship and camaraderie, giving youth from across the Eastern Diocese the opportunity to build life-long relationships.

ASP includes service AND touring, providing participants a range of diverse experiences in Armenia.

ASP is led by an experienced clergyman who has traveled extensively in Armenia and led the ASP trip previously.

ASP is only 3 weeks long, allowing participants time to explore other opportunities during the summer.

A New Generation of Church Leaders Develops Skills, Builds Confidence, at the 11th ACYOA Young Adult Leadership Conference

2010 ASP TripMarch 14, 2010 - The Eastern Diocese saw the bright future of the Armenian Church in the faces of participants at the 11th annual ACYOA National Young Adult Leadership Conference, which met in Tarrytown, N.Y., from March 5 to 7, 2010.

The two-day conference attracted close to 100 people, including 67 young participants from 32 parishes in the Eastern Diocese, led by clergy, Diocesan Council members, ACYOA Central Council members, and seminarians.

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), presided over the conference, which gave participants an opportunity to hone their leadership skills and to network with ACYOA members from parishes throughout the Eastern Diocese.
